Ancient Mosaic-Making

Mosaic is an ancient art form that immortalized both everyday and mythological scenes from the Roman Empire. For over 200 years, the Cassio family of mosaicists has kept this tradition. You are invited to our historic studio in the lively Monti neighborhood where we will share ancient secrets about the craft that you can apply to your own work of art. Surrounded by original tools, sketches by famous Italian artists, and important mosaic masterpieces, you will learn about distinctly Roman techniques. During this course, you will create your own unique piece of art — utilizing the principles of texture, composition, and marble tile cutting in the process. A master mosaicist will guide you based on ancient Roman mosaic rules and methods. You will leave the workshop with a one-of-a-kind, 7 by 5 inch masterpiece to commemorate your time in the Eternal City. Please note, this workshop requires handling various tools. For safety reasons, we recommend this experience to those over the age of 12.

The Art of Conserving Art

The visit in the Merlini Storti restoration studio gives guests the opportunity see from up close classical and contemporary artworks and experience them through the delicate process of conservation. Valeria Merlini and Daniela Storti, among the leading Italian experts in restoration and conservation, who have restored numerous masterpieces including three paintings by Caravaggio, offer visitors the chance to understand the importance of the artisanal aspect of an artist’s creative work in a journey that will enrich people’s relationship with art. In our atelier, guests will experience art in a direct and intimate way, being able to observe from up close the restorers’ work and learning about the fascinating world of art techniques and materials. At the end of this exclusive artistic experience, we like to offer our guests a small aperitif, that includes a glass of prosecco or wine and a few traditional Italian snacks.

Catacombs The Coolest Underground Tour

We go underground where it is 16°C (60°F for us Yankees) a great way to beat the heat With over 300 km of underground tunnels surrounding Rome, even if you go out there alone, they will not let you go down by yourself, only with a guide to assure you don't get lost and become a permanent resident. With 10 years guiding experience under my belt, I will take you off the beaten path and bring ancient Roman society to life, telling the Stories behind the art and architecture. Showing you the masterpieces that you absolutely have to see before you leave Rome. We first go down to the Basilica that was built at the end of the 4th century AD above the tomb of the two martyrs Nereus and Achilleu. Then we will walk down further to the Best Preserved Catacombs of Rome. I will introduce you to the early Christian community of Imperial Rome, and of Catholicism in the city between the 2nd and 9th centuries. Ending near the Appia Antica where you are free to continue your Adventures. Come along for an after-dark stroll to explore some of these tales of Rome. We begin in one of Rome's liveliest squares, now full of bars and restaurants. However, it was once a place of execution, and reminders of this still stand - hear the tale of Giordano Bruno, one of Italy's greatest minds who got on the wrong side of the Church. Then we stroll through the backstreets, arriving at one of the oldest bridges, which is haunted by one of Rome's most infamous characters. Strolling down a medieval street, we come to a unique church, home to a mysterious order of monks with a rather macabre task. From here, we reach the site of one of the world's most notorious historical prisons, then pass the tomb of the notorious Borgia Pope, before arriving at the home of an infamous poisoner. Soon, we reach Castel Sant'Angelo, where we talk about one of Rome's most famous executions, which the city's people didn't want - the Cenci family. Altogether, it's a fascinating alternative look at Roman history. It's an easy walk, lasting about 2 hours. We end close to some nice bars and restaurants. Colosseum Underground Dungeons Experience, with Roman Forum

Connect with ancient Rome on this special access tour of the Colosseum Dungeons, Roman Forum and Cesar's Palace. During the visit we'll uncover the Colosseum's dark 2,000 year history and gain restricted access to sites only accessible with accredited guides. At the Colosseum we'll skip the long ticket lines and venture into the dungeons, a labyrinth of passages, elevators, and trap doors which were used to bring gladiators and animals up to the arena floor, shocking and thrilling the crowds. Next you'll walk in the same steps as emperors, gladiators and doomed prisoners on the arena floor. The arena floor is where the Colosseum's violent games took place, and gives you the perspective of gladiators, as well as a great opportunity for photos.
